Major Contribution: Cleaning up carcasses

Rarely will a vulture attack a healthy animal; they prefer the dead or the sick. They eat until completely full, and then will sit, almost in a slumber, while their food is digested. This may seem like eerie behavior to us but it is really very helpful. This habit helps clear the world of corpses, which would otherwise rot and spread disease. In places like India, where the vulture population is in serious trouble, the rate of rabies has risen sharply. Since the vulture no longer cleanup the animals, they are left for wild dogs and rodents. Who, when they have eaten the rotting animals, contract diseases like rabies and in turn spread it to the human population. India has the highest rate of rabies in the world.

1. Rarely does a vulture have to defend itself from predators, but when they do, they’ll vomit at the predator and fly away.

2. Some vultures will eat every part of the dead animal, including the bones.
