Major Contribution: Assist humans in transportation, farming, and sport.

For centuries, horses were so essential to human society that many cultures saw them as a divine species. And today, they are still considered by many to be the most beautiful and beloved animals in the world.

To list their contributions is impossible, since they have, and continue, to serve us in transportation, crowd control, cattle herding, physical and mental therapy, and general workhorses. In more developed countries, their more often than not used for recreational purposes. But this is no small thing. The American Horse Council claims that horse related activities contribute an amazing $39 billion directly to the economy and over $100 billion indirectly.

1. There are about 75 million horses in the world today.

2. If well cared for, horses can live a long time. There is one claim of a horse living to 66.
