Major Contribution: Eating and burying feces.

We may consider the dung beetle, as its name implies, a filthy animal, but we cannot deny the importance of their contribution. Dung beetles bury and eat the dung of animals across the planet. If not for them the ground would be covered in the feces of these animals. Aside from the smell, it would attract flied and other disease-invested insects. Soon these creatures would pass the diseases onto cattle and other animals. One estimate claims that dung beetles save the cattle industry $380 million a year.

1. There are three types of dung beetle: rollers, which roll feces into a ball, tunnellers, which bury feces, and dwellers, which live in manure.

2. The Ancient Egyptians considered dung beetles sacred.
