Harmful
Animals!

Major Contribution: Insect control.

There may be no animal with more myths surrounding it then bats. We often see them as bloodsuckers and disease ridden. It is true that bats cause most cases of rabies in the US, but infected bats represent less than 1% percent of the total population.

And without bats we’d be riddled with insects. Each night, bats fly from their coup for their nightly feeding and in the process rid our neighborhoods of thousands upon thousands of bugs. Without bats, these insects would otherwise destroy our crops, transmit diseases, and endanger our cattle, not to mention, drive us crazy. In one hour, a single brown bat can consume over 1,000 insects. They may be ugly, and even a little scary, but we are all better off because of their real eating habits.

While they do a lot of good, bats could
also be considered Harmful Animals.
