Beneficial
Animals!

Cost: $5 billion per year in the United States
Major Concerns: Damage to buildings and equipment

For homeowners, "You've got termites" remains one of the most horrible phrases. These pests burrow into the wood and often remain hidden until serious damage is done. Once inside a home they don't stop with the wood, but begin destroying carpets, clothing, and any cellulosic-based product.

Estimates of the damage they cause go as a high as $5 billion per year in the United States alone. Placing metal guards around likely termite sources is one remedy, but still homeowners must be constantly on guard against the pests. Once they enter the home, only qualified exterminators are really effective in getting rid of them.

While they do a lot of harm, termites could also be considered Beneficial Animals.
