Termites feast on wood. This trait makes the very thought of termites frightful to homeowners. But this very same trait makes them a wonder in the forest. Their habit of eating and recycling dead wood provides innumerable services to the planet. It helps the soil and plant life. It provides homes to wood dwelling animals, thereby helping the entire food chain. And by clearing out forest of its old wood and foliage, they help prevent forest fires. Without them, it is very possible that a single spark could cause irreparable damage.

While they do a lot of good, termites could
