Cost: $2 billion per year in the United States.
Major Concerns: Damage to crops and automobile accidents.
They are arguably the most beautiful animals in the world. They are also extremely important economically; used in food, weapons, shoes, and transportation, to name just a few. In spite of these great qualities, deer are also a very serious problem, especially where their population grows unabated. In places like Minnesota, between hunters, accidents, and traps about 300,000 deer are killed every year, but still their population is over a million.
Generally their damage is done in three major areas. Firstly, they have extremely high nutrient needs and will eat crops, seriously hurting a farmer’s livelihood. Secondly, they cause serious problems in the forest, which they leave almost bare. And finally, they cause car accidents across the country. Some even claim they are involved in more fatalities than drunk drivers. In the United States deer cause about $100 million of damage in crops every year, another $750 million in forest regeneration, and about $1 billion in car accidents. |
