The Big Dipper is not a ____ but an asterism. |
Explanation
Sometimes shapes are found in the stars but they only use some of the stars in a constellation those shapes are called an asterism. An asterism is a group of stars that only make up part of a constellation. The Big Dipper and Little Dipper are really asterisms. The Little dipper is an asterism in the Ursa Minor constellation. The constellation known as Ursa Minor (little bear) contains the North Star which sailors use to point them northward. The Big Dipper is an asterism in the Ursa Major (big bear) constellation. All the stars in a constellation like Ursa Major appear to be close together but some of them are really far apart in space.
