Star Wars was the name of a famous science fiction movie by director, George Lucas. It was also the nickname given to Ronald Reagan's Strategic Defense Initiative technology to defend against the Soviet Union, who Reagan referred to as "the Evil Empire", another reference from the same movie. Star Wars was supposed to allow the United States to intercept enemy missiles before they hit their targets. It was very controversial, and many believed that Star Wars was technically unfeasible or prohibitively expensive.
