"A Big Bite.

Lynx can kill their prey in one powerful bite.

These cats are not the fastest runners, and therefore rarely chase down their prey. Instead, they silently stalk their prey, until, at the right moment, they pounce on the animal and kill it.

Their diet includes small mammals such as rabbits, rodents, foxes, weasels, small deer, fish and birds.",

"Need to strike the right balance.

The lynx always looks like it is leaning forward.

Their back legs are longer than their front legs so these cats appear to be slouching forward.

Their long legs and large padded feet help them move across snow.",

"Where's my mommy?

Male and female lynx only come together for breeding purposes, then the males depart. Kittens are raised by a single parent – the mother.

The birth weight of a kitten ranges from 4 ½ to 15 ounces depending on the species.

There are usually one to four kittens in a litter.",

"Open wide!

Lynx kittens are born with their eyes and ears closed.

Usually born in the spring-time, the availability of food dictates their survival. If there is an abundance of food kittens grow quickly, if food is scarce, many kittens will not survive.

A lynx kitten nurses for up to five months before it begins to eat solid food.",

"All in the family.

Lynx kittens reach maturity at the age of two years old, although at ten months they can fend for themselves.

They stay with their mother until about a year. Often siblings will travel and hunt together for several months after they leave the maternal home.",

"Cat calls.

Lynx make sounds similar to a domestic cat but louder.

They meow, howl, spit, hiss and they also purr.

They howl and growl during the breeding season and a mother lynx will purr when she is nursing or washing her kittens. Just like domestic cats, a mother carries her young in her mouth.",

"Cat speak.

The lynx communicates by voice and other signals.

It leaves scent marks, and uses a range of facial expressions and different ear positions to communicate messages to other lynx.

The hair tufts on their ears are thought to give them excellent hearing, and act as a sensory device like whiskers.",

"Losing lynx.

Lynx are endangered for a number of reasons.

It is estimated that 90,000 lynx pelts are sold to the world’s fur markets annually. Lynx have a soft, luxurious coat which is in demand in the fashion industry, especially the lighter-colored fur. They are also threatened by development, as forests are destroyed for development and agricultural land.",

"Eyes that shine.

The name lynx comes from the Greek work meaning ‘to shine’.

It is believed that the origins of the word lynx may be a reference to the way in which their yellow-green eyes shine at night.",

"Rise and shine.

Lynx are most active at dawn and dusk.

They kill prey either by biting the neck and severing the spinal cord or by suffocating it. They don’t always eat an entire animal in one sitting, but often bury the uneaten prey and return to it the next day.",

"What's your vertical?

Lynx are accomplished and agile jumpers.

They don’t run very fast but they can jump 10 feet in the air. They have been known to jump into the air from a sitting position to catch game birds in flight.",

"Big Cats.

The Siberian male lynx weighs about 84 pounds. A subspecies of the Eurasian lynx, the Siberian lynx is the largest and heaviest. It is 39 inches long and measure up to 27 inches tall (at the shoulders).

Other species of lynx are about 19 to 35 inches long, 16 to 22 inches tall, and weigh between 18 to 60 pounds.",

"Heart of a Lion.

The Siberian lynx will hunt prey three or four times its own size.

The largest of the lynx family, they have been known to hunt and kill large reindeer.

The lynx is hunted by farmers as a pest, as it will kill livestock such as goats and sheep.",

"Deer meat.

The Eurasian lynx enjoys a diet of hoofed mammals.

In the wild, they prefer a diet of deer and other large hoofed mammals.

Eurasian lynx living in Russia’s Ural Mountains follow the winter migration routes of deer, reindeer and moose, essentially stalking their food supply over winter.",

"Here kitty kitty kitty.

The Spanish lynx is one of the rarest of all the cat species. Listed as critically endangered, the Spanish or Iberian lynx is found only in Spain and Portugal and has only about 300 individuals left in the wild. Rabbit is the mainstay of their diet, but they also hunt duck and low-flying birds.

Their numbers have declined significantly because they have lost a great deal of their food source, especially the rabbit. Rabbit numbers declined when myxomatosis was released to control the rabbit population in the 1950s. ",

"Winter attack.

The Canadian lynx has feet like snowshoes.

They have huge paws with long thick fur. When they walk they spread their toes out wide like snowshoes which helps them walk in soft, deep snow.

They can easily sneak up on small prey without being heard.",

"Snow survival.

Canadian lynx are dependent on the snowshoe hare for survival.

Their main prey in dense forest regions is the nocturnal snowshoe hare. When the snowshoe hare population drops, the lynx population will quickly dwindle as well.

About 40 percent of the lynx population may starve to death if there is a significant decline in the snowshoe hare population.",

"Home on the range.

The Canadian lynx will search up to 12 miles during the night in search of food. The male lynx has a hunting range of about 20 square miles, and the female has a hunting range about half that size.

They often climb trees and leap down on top of unsuspecting prey."];
